Charlotte was the location of the United States' first gold rush in 1799. In 1799, in nearby Cabarrus County, 12-year-old Conrad Reed found a 17-pound rock, which his family used as a doorstop. Three years later, a jeweler determined it was nearly solid gold. This set off the nation’s first gold rush. For over 50 years, Charlotte led the nation in gold production until the California Gold Rush of 1848.

Charlotte is a basketball city. And it's primarily a college basketball city. The Charlotte Hornets' famous name dates back to 1780. The Charlotte Hornets used to be a baseball team, then a football team before they became a basketball team.

Charlotte is the pimento cheese capital of the world. In November 1959 the first Family Dollar opened up in Charlotte, NC.

Astronaut Charlie Duke was born in Charlotte on October 3, 1935. At age 36, he became the 10th man to walk on the moon.
